Throughout the Christian community, one often hears accounts of how God works His very wonderful and mysterious ways in and through the lives of His children. Such is the story of New Song Ministries and its founder Jerry Christensen.
The story is unusual because it actually begins in 1989 while Pastor Jerry was a prison inmate, serving time at the Waupun Correctional Institution in Waupun, Wisconsin. One day while watching a televised basketball game by himself, Pastor Jerry was called into a life with Jesus Christ and begun at once to read the Bible and everything else he coud get his hands on about spiritual matters. Simultaneously, he started to share and witness with other inmates who would listen and soon settled into his "new life" which began to change dramatically.
Shortly after being relocated to Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution, Pastor Jerry was given the position of Chapel Clerk which served to expand and strengthen his Christian walk. It was during this time period that he began to reach to the outside through volunteers, etc, many of whom encouraged him to pursue his desire to develop a ministry to help other inmates once he was himself paroled.
The last stop for Pastor Jerry was St. John's Center, a pre-release facility in Milwaukee where he continued to work with other inmates while also reaching out to hurting souls he encountered in the outside community. His ministry really began to develop during this time period. Finally, Pastor Jerry was released on parole in December of 1991 and began to structure a more formal outreach program which was later to become New Song Ministries.
In 1992, the Lord again blessed Pastor Jerry with a lovely and devoted Christian wife named Nancy and together they devote their loves through a full-time effort to New Song Ministries, relying entirely on private gifts and donations for their sustenance.
New Song Ministries continues to deliver faith-based services to jail and prison returnees and their families in the Kenosha community in 2006. The primary objectives - as they have been since 1994 - are providing a circle of personal-level support for finding a job and place to live, providiing transportation to the job and to local support services and helping find a church home to worship and grow spiritually. Financial support is important, volunteers are welcome, prayers are needed.
